It is a great pleasure to contribute to this Festschrift for George Bermann, who introduced me to the field of comparative law when I was his student at Columbia Law School. He was at that time a young, ever enthusiastic and inspiring law professor. In the decades that have elapsed since then, I have known him in a variety of contexts, such as the American Society of Comparative Law, the International Academy of Comparative Law, the American Law Institute, a working group at the Collège de France, and once even as a joint expert in a case. Each of these further areas of acquaintance, in most of which he had a leadership role, has increased my appreciation of and admiration for him. It is a privilege to dedicate the following to him, with gratitude for all that I and generations of students have learned from him and from his scholarship, and for the lasting imprint that his contributions have made on many fields, most notably comparative law, European Union law, and International Arbitration.
