Despite an upswing in the use of arbitration to settle international commercial disputes throughout the world and the passage of the Inter-American Convention on International Commercial Arbitration at an Organization of American States conference in Panama City in January 1975, there have been relatively few international commercial arbitration cases in Latin America. The author points to a lack of familiarity with and suspicion about the arbitration process, a large number of rules from which to choose, enforcement problems, and little information about proven benefits. Concrete suggestions for remedying this situation are provided. This article is part of a larger keynote address that is being delivered at the Sixth international Arbitration Congress of the International (Council tor Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), to be held in Mexico City from March 12 to 16, l978.
