This is an interim report on the practical problems of the businessman and his lawyer in connection with Soviet-American trade arbitration.

The basic document is the US-USSR Trade Agreement signed October 18, 1972. Article VII of this agreement does the following:

1. Both governments encourage the adoption of arbitration.

2. It is specifically recommended that they "provide for arbitration under the arbitration rules of the Economic Commission for Europe of January 20, 1966, in which case such agreements should also designate an appointing authority in a country other than the US or USSR for the appointment of an arbitrator or arbitrators in accordance with those rules and to specify the place of arbitration in a country other than the US or the USSR that is a party to the 1958 Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards."
