Engaged in the private practice of law in Minneapolis from 1967 to 2007, the last 17 years of which were as Senior Partner and Head of the Construction Law Group of the international law firm of Faegre and Benson LLP (now Faegre, Baker Daniels) with offices then in Minneapolis, Denver, Des Moines, Boulder, London, Frankfurt and Shanghai.

Co-author with Patrick J. O’Connor, Jr. of BRUNER & O’CONNOR ON CONSTRUCTION LAW (ThomsonReuters/West 2002, supplemented annually), the 12 volume, 11,000 page legal treatise regarded as the most authoritative ever written on American law governing the building process and building dispute resolution, and cited as legal authority in more than 300 judicial opinions reported by U.S. federal and state courts. Author or co-author of more than 50 professional articles, such as Dual Track Proceedings in Arbitration and Litigation: Reducing the Peril of “Double Jeopardy” by Consolidation, Joinder and Appellate Arbitration, 31 Int’l Constr. L. Rev. 537 (October 2014).
