Arbitration has played a historic role in disputes of all kinds, and particularly in U.S. labor disputes. 

In 1956, the U.S. Supreme Court expressed strong support for arbitration to resolve disputes and protect industrial peace. The Court said industrial peace “can be best obtained only in that way.” Textile Workers v. Lincoln Mills, 353 U.S. 448 at 455 (1957). The Lincoln Mills decision was followed by the famous Steelworkers Trilogy of United Steelworkers of America v. American Mfg Co., 363 U.S. 564 (1960); United Steelworkers of America v. Warrior & Gulf Navigation Co., 363 U.S. 574 (1960), and United Steelworkers of America v. Enterprise Wheel & Car Corp., 363 U.S. 593 (1960).
