With the increased computerization of most businesses and the introduction of other new technology, labor and management are encountering a new type of problem in the workplace. Disputes are arising, resulting from a shift in workload caused by new technology, involving loss of bargaining unit work, assignment of new work, changes in job classification and wage rates, and health and safety issues.

This article examines how third party neutrals can help companies and unions formulate guidelines for dealing with new-technology workplace disputes, focusing particularly on clerical workers in office settings. Case examples illustrate how arbitrators have ruled on a variety of related disputes and demonstrate the patterns that are emerging in this evolving field of labor relations.
