Practitioners and academics in the field of dispute-settlement methods have evinced curiosity and interest in the recent round of arbitration of salaries of Major League baseball players. As one of the cadre of arbitrators retained by the club and the player associations for this imaginative exercise, I have received many telephone calls and letters of inquiry in respect of various aspects of the process. The extent of interest persuades me that the desperate thirst for information may be slaked by a few observations of a participant. This is not written as a submission for a doctorate, nor does it purport to constitute an exhaustive evaluation of the procedure. It is in the nature of a footnote to whatever may be written by those who will subject the procedure to more intensive and deliberate scrutiny.
