In the late 1960s and early 1970s, arbitrators confronted the task of deciding discharge cases involving drug-related misconduct on a wider scale than ever before. Because drug discharge cases were a new phenomenon for many, they were unable to look to earlier decisions and had to formulate standards as each case was presented. Since a decade has passed since this group of drug discharge cases was decided, it is now possible to provide some insight into the prevailing standards in discharge cases involving drug-related misconduct, both on and off company premises.
