In the early 1970s, Ryder System, Inc, offered home study and resident training courses in tractor-trailer driving and heavy equipment operation at about 20 sites. Students reasonably expected that this instruction and training would qualify them for employment as drivers.

Because of allegations that Ryder and other vocational schools had not fulfilled job promises, the U,S, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigated several training systems. The commission charged that some representations about work prospects and earning potential may have been misleading.
