Researchers studying emotions generally agree on the categorization of six prime emotions: Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Sadness and Surprise. 

Most of us, if asked to name emotions, usually miss surprise, although it has distinct mental and physical characteristics. 

Surprise is universal and plays a core role in the survival of humans and other species. It is triggered by an unanticipated situation or stimuli. It is usually sudden and involuntary with a brief lifespan, usually of a fraction of a second before other emotions or thoughts take over
