The effort to create a viable, treaty-based system for resolving inter-American commercial disputes by arbitration goes back at least a quarter-century and includes the United Nations Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards and the more recent Inter-American Convention, which has just recently been put into practice by the Bush administration. This article discusses the status of inter-American arbitration following Washington's action.
