When parties are involved in state or federal public court litigation, much time and effort is spent gathering and evaluating information about the judge who might decide the case. Not infrequently, additional time and effort is spent attempting to steer a case toward a jurist who is capable, fair, energetic and, perhaps, just slightly inclined toward that party's side of the case. Leaving out the extreme forms of judge-shopping, all of this activity is an ethical and appropriate part of a lawyer's work on behalf of a client.
