PROF. WALLACE: Well, we might as well get started. I am Don
Wallace and I am Chairman of the International Law Institute, and I want
to welcome you on behalf of the various proprietors and sponsors,
including Kim Phan, who is our Executive Director, who is sitting there.
 
I will just say a few things--more than I want to say, but Borzu told
me I have to say something, and Kim is always insistent that I tell you
about the Institute, but you have all been given a brochure and I commend
it to all of you. I hope you will read it carefully and profitably.
 
Many of you know about our Institute, but I will say just a word or
two about it. We're quite old, actually. We were founded in 1955, along
with our sister Institute in Germany at Johann Wolfgang Goethe
University in Frankfurt. Originally, we did a bit of European-American
exchanges, but now we are principally, although not exclusively, focused
on developing country capacity building. Some of the developing
countries are called emerging markets. We're all developing, of course, so
maybe we can expand our mission even further.
 
We're really quite general in our interests. Mostly it's economy,
business, commerce, development, trade, not so much on public
international and not very much on human rights, not too much on
domestic American affairs. Although we have been doing for years a
program orienting lawyers coming from all over the world to American
law schools, on our constitution, the common law, the common law
mentality, and we do a fair amount of that, still.
 
In recent years, we've set up so-called “Centers of Expertise,” and
Borzu Sabahi and Ian Laird are the Co-Directors of our international
investment law center and Anne Marie Whitesell, who I think will be
joining us later, is the Director of another, our Center on Alternate Dispute
Resolution, and we have other Centers about which you can read.
