This article describes the events leading up to the establishment of the Iran-United States Claim Tribunal and outlines the development of the Tribunal as an institution. It examines the selection and experiences of the arbitrators who have served on the Tribunal and discusses the types of issues they have had to confront.

The authors conclude that although there have been many challenges and setbacks over the years, the Tribunal has been a success. It has not only decided hundreds of cases involving hundreds of millions of dollars, but also has contributed greatly to knowledge about the law and practice of international arbitration.
