THE WORK OF THE PROPERTY CLAIMS COMMISSION OF THE GERMAN FOUNDATION “REMEMBRANCE, RESPONSIBILITY AND THE FUTURE”
Pierre A. Karrer*
The property claims process of the German Foundation, “Remembrance, Responsibility and the Future,” (the Foundation) had its roots in 42 class actions filed during the 1990s in United States federal courts (most of which were in New Jersey) by Holocaust victims against major German companies. These class actions ended in a complex, negotiated overall settlement, brokered by numerous victims’ organizations, plaintiffs’ lawyers, the Federation of German Industries, and eight sovereign countries.
