The best way to begin is not with what already is and try to improve on it, but with what does not yet exist and try to imagine it. As Mark Twain pointed out, “You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.”

The fundamental reason for trying to imagine an alternative future was brilliantly captured by Greek novelist Nikos Kazantzakis: “By believing passionately in something that still does not exist, we create it. The non-existent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired.”

And Henry David Thoreau revealed how to do so without slipping into utopian thinking: “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.”
