I. BASIC INFORMATION
A. History and Background of the Institute
The German Arbitration Institute (DIS) has a long history of providing dispute resolution services in both domestic and international arbitrations. It was established on January 1st, 1992, as a result of a merger between the German Arbitration Committee (founded in 1920 by leading organizations of German business and industry) and the German Arbitration Institute (founded in 1974 by business federations, academics and arbitration practitioners). It is a private and independent non-profit organization unattached to any chamber of commerce, government or other body. Its corporate seat is located in Berlin, whereas its operational headquarters are in Bonn and Berlin. The DIS also has a satellite office in Munich.
The DIS Secretariat performs the day-to-day management of its dispute resolution and other services under the directorship of the DIS Secretary General. The DIS occupies a multi-national and multi-lingual staff, committed to excellence and efficiency. In general, the DIS dispute resolution procedures are less heavily administered than those of other institutions. Throughout the entire proceedings, the DIS Secretariat is of course at the disposal of the parties, counsel, and arbitrators to answer any questions they may have.
The DIS has around 1500 members from Germany and abroad, including practitioners and academics engaged in domestic and international arbitration, major trade organizations and chambers of commerce, as well as leading companies. The dispute resolution services are independent from the membership and, thus, accessible to non-members.
