Studies of leadership styles have focused on such topics as superior-subordinant interaction, leadership and group performance, and leadership as it affects the decision-making process. There is a paucity of research about the effects of leadership style on grievance rates.

First-line supervisors in 10 unionized plants were studied by Jennings (1974) to determine their attitudes toward the grievance procedure. Jennings considered: (a) the significance of grievance handling as a supervisory responsibility; (b) the foreman's responsibilities and activities in grievance handling; and (c) actions taken by other line and staff management officials in the grievance process.
