On January 1, 2014 Act No. 216/1994 Coll., on Arbitration Proceedings and Enforcement of Arbitration Awards was amended to expand its scope to regulate proceedings before arbitration commissions of industry associations. Arbitration commissions are bodies which settle disputes that arise internally within an industry association. Several Czech industry associations, particularly in the domain of sports, such as the Czech Olympic Committee, have established such arbitration bodies. These arbitration bodies have heard a number of cases since the amendment was passed.
A.2 Trends and Tendencies
Arbitration continues to be a popular method of dispute resolution for Czech clients. This is true for both domestic and international disputes. For smaller domestic disputes, clients tend to use the Arbitration Court of the Czech Economic Chamber and the Czech Agrarian Chamber (the “Arbitration Court”), which handles more than 3,000 disputes annually. For larger domestic and international disputes, clients tend to resolve disputes using the ICC Rules, VIAC3 Rules or the LCIA Rules, even if disputes are purely domestic.
