SUSAN FRANCK: I am here in my capacity as the Vice-Chair for
the Academic Council of the Institute for Transnational
Arbitration. I have the joy to be substituting for Andrea Bjorklund
whose plane was delayed.
I hope that you all have had an opportunity to enjoy your
lunch, and of course, we cannot go further without thanking the
generosity of the sponsors of this luncheon which include the
Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and its North American branch,
FTI Consulting, and Interface Consulting.
I am honored and delighted to be introducing Martin Hunter
and Jarrod Wong. Martin Hunter in a way needs no introduction,
but certainly deserves one. I use his book, Redfern and Hunter,1 to
teach my own international arbitration classes, and he never
ceases to educate us. Professor Hunter was a partner in
Freshfields for over 27 years, and primarily responsible for the
establishment of its International Arbitration Group.
Upon retiring, he re-qualified as a barrister. He joined Essex
Court Chambers, and he continues to practice in international
arbitration. He also served as the International Dispute
Resolution professor at Nottingham Trent University, and he was
appointed as emeritus there in 2010. However Martin has done
academic work beyond the U.K.; he has also taught worldwide in
India, in Brazil, in Budapest, and is largely responsible for the
international knowledge transfer related to international
commercial dispute settlement.
