As its opening sentence confirms, this collection of cases and materials on arbitration with detailed commentary is based upon the "course materials" used by the author in the Dickinson School of Law at the Pennsylvania State University. In his introduction the author expresses the view that the audience to which the book is directed is “the bar and the law school community.”

The work is no mere collection of cases and materials. It contains significant introductory material and a detailed commentary on the cases and materials collected. Consistent with its role as a teaching aid a number of exercises, questions and suggested “productive avenues for enquiries” are added to the explanations and commentary. The work is written primarily from the point of view of the law of the United States although it does contain two chapters relating to international arbitration. Even here, however, the emphasis is on international arbitration from the point of view of United States law. The work is not particularly useful for persons outside the United States who are simply looking for a general introduction to the law of arbitration. Its primary use will be for persons interested in arbitration in the United States. However, the work will also prove a useful introduction for persons already having a knowledge of arbitration who wish to gain an insight into the United States law on the subject.
