MR. DAVID KITZEN: Welcome everyone. Whenever you are ready, you are welcome to start. 

MR. TODD WEILER: Thank you, David. And thank you everyone for coming. It is the 15th annual, second virtual, Conference on Investment Law and Arbitration and we’re glad that everyone could come. And we’re particularly thrilled that we’ve got a pack of new treaties to talk about. Without further ado, I’m going to go right to Professor Ms. Freya Baetens, my once co-editor of a book about 10 books ago for both of us. Take it away, Freya.

MS. FREYA BAETENS: Okay, thank you very much, Todd. I think probably we all know each other, but I think it would be nice perhaps before we start that everybody very briefly introduces themselves. I would suggest we start with our speakers, Cherine, Paola, and Ian.

MS. CHERINE FOTY: Hello, my name is Cherine Foty. I’m a Senior Associate at Jones Day in Paris,  and a member of the New York and Paris Bars. Today, I am representing the “better” position with respect to the new generation BITs. Thank you very much for having me.

MS. PAOLA PATARROYO: My name is Paola Patarroyo. I’m a Colombian lawyer, a member of the New York bar, and currently based in Bogota working at Esguerra Asesores, and teaching public international law at the Universidad de La Sabana. I will be presenting the position that recent model of the BITs is worse, and very happy to be here.

MR. IAN LAIRD: My name is Ian Laird. I’m one of the panelists today and Todd has invited me to speak a little briefly on the new Canada BIT-model BIT.
