On Sept. 24, 2023, please raise a glass to celebrate the centenary of the first truly international multilateral treaty on arbitration.

The League of Nations’ Geneva Protocol on Arbitration Clauses (see the United Nations’ Treaty Collection at bit.ly/3xYoKyU), set in motion what Alfred Nussbaum and others called “the Arbitration Movement” (see Alfred Nussbaum, “The Arbitration Movement”, in International Year Book on Civil and Commercial Arbitration (the AAA translation), 387 (1928), and L. Woolsey, Review of the International Year Book on Civil and Commercial Arbitration (the AAA translation) (1928), in 14 AJIL 846 (1930) (see http://bit.ly/3Z3nAhL)).

That was initially a drive to popularize arbitration in the late 1920s and early 1930s, producing along the way the International Chamber of Commerce-inspired Geneva Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitration Awards 1927.
