International arbitration has increasingly come under criticism for a variety of perceived ills. In this session, a panel of distinguished in-house counsel from across the globe will share their international arbitration experiences and frankly discuss what “arbitrators should do better.”

ALAN CRAIN: One thing we talk about is efficiency and having arbitral panels end on time, so we will end this on time. Thus, I will make very brief introductions since you have everyone’s resume. Anke Sessler is in charge of all litigation and arbitration for Siemens worldwide, has been doing that for the last five years, has participated at the ITA, contributes to the ICC and the IBA, speaks on arbitration, and publishes on arbitration. Laura Robertson is in charge of all arbitration worldwide for ConocoPhillips. Peter Rees is in charge of all legal matters for Shell. Like Peter, I am in charge of all legal matters for a multinational, but most of my experience in arbitration does not come as an advocate. It is from mostly sitting as an arbitrator and as a chair of arbitral panels for close to 30 years. So we are not going to be criticizing arbitrators up here.
