In 1986, the Institute of Transnational Arbitration (ITA) was organized to promote international arbitration, and to provide education about it to companies, lawyers and judges in the southwestern U.S. For 27 years, it has addressed pressing issues of international arbitration, promoting the ratification of the New York and Washington (ICSID) Conventions, and the acceptance and use of international arbitration generally, while educating a generation of lawyers on the intricacies of its use. With the energy industry largely headquartered in the southwestern U.S., and its international reach increasingly expanding, the ITA found fertile ground, and its organization and efforts were timely. Over its 27-year history, the ITA has grown from a small regional initiative to a major institution, along the way attracting contributions from the brightest minds in the field.
