I. Introduction

Inadequate plans and specifications, schedule delays, payment

delays, cost overruns, a variety of unforeseen conditions, weather

problems, defaults by suppliers or subcontractors, changed government

requirements—these are only a few of the potentially troubling problems

that can arise on a project. Not surprisingly, a few partnering projects

have had to be re-partnered because of inadequate follow-up. Seeing that

the necessary follow-up occurs, so that the various participants

communicate effectively with each other to work out disputes before

they escalate is critical to the success of partnering.

Here are some practical tips from my experience as a partnering

facilitator that will help all stakeholders maintain the follow-up effort

throughout the project and ensure that it yields the maximum return.

II. Just after the Workshop

Spread the word about how the partnering effort should be carried out

on the job. Spend time with your staff from the outset to coach them in the

clear communication and the positive attitude they will need throughout the

project. Since many of the key field people, subcontractors and suppliers

may not have attended the partnering workshop, they will think that it’s

“business as usual.” To dispel that impression, inform them about what

occurred at the workshop and advise them about the skills they will need to

work with other team members and achieve the partnering goals. As other

subcontractors and suppliers begin on-site work, take them aside to bring

them up to date on partnering for this project and what that will entail.
