The need for cooperation in decision making among groups concerned with environmental issues is highlighted in this article on the dispute resolution process, lo avoid the escalation of disputes, the author suggests the introduction of a facilitator at the early stages of discussions between parties negotiating over complex environmental matters. The facilitator manage? the dispute, enabling the parties lo make informed decisions, while avoiding unnecessary conflict.

The responsibilities of the facilitator—as distinguished from those oi a mediator—are discussed, in addition to the techniques available to the parties to assist them in reaching solutions to their problems.
