"Power to the people," a popular contemporary slogan, symbolizes the burgeoning desire to preserve the worth of individual members of a society becoming ever more mechanized, centralized and standardized. As many of our institutions slowly become subject to what economist term "economics of scale," ("big business," "big labor," and "big government" being just three examples of the phenomenon) an issue fundamental to our societal well-being is thereby generated. To what extent can society safeguard individual rights without crippling a system designed to provide certain benefits to the collective body?
