Underdeveloped countries of the Third World, the author argues, require a different brand of industrial relations than is generally practiced in Western society. Governments must play a strong role and the parties must set aside personal differences in an effort to foster national development. Conciliation and arbitration— processes designed to bring about the peaceful settlement of disputes— thus are an especially important feature of industrial life. The Ethiopian system of dispute settlement is described and a comparison is drawn between pre- and post-socialist legislation.
