Canada has recently taken major steps to develop a nationwide system of international commercial arbitration. This article discusses arbitration legislation adopted by the federal government of Canada and describes the resulting activity in the provinces, focusing on recent legislative developments in Quebec and British Columbia.

In addition, the operations of the Quebec National and International Commercial Arbitration Centre and the British Columbia International Commercial Arbitration Centre are examined, concluding that as arbitration emerges in Canada, the importance of these institutions is likely to increase.
