I appreciate the opportunity you have afforded me to address your meeting this evening, the more particularly since the invitation to do so was extended to me through the good offices of my friend and your President, Don Straus. He and I, as you may know, were college classmates and share many common memories, none of which, may I say, include sit-ins, teach-ins, break-ins or similar activity common to today's curriculum. I do not recall that we ever considered occupying the President's office; if we had, we probably would have refrained from doing so on the simple premise that he would not have liked it. Certainly he would not have considered such action arbitrable. And with that last word, I have a lead-in to my remarks tonight.

It is interesting to consider that in some respects the same forces and concerns which brought the Federal Trade Commission into being were also at work in the development and growth of the arbitration concept.
